Ptelou (Ormos), Gulf of Volos, Greece

July 2017

39º01.9 N 22º 58.1 E  (Ormos Loutró)

This is the large bay on the mainland side of Stenon Volou, the entrance to the Gukf of Volos. Although the Pilot Book ( Greek Waters Pilot – Heikell R&L) describes a number of anchorages here we had difficulties with all of them.

The one located off Pigadhi was very crowded with just a couple of yachts and all the small craft moorings and so we tried the eastern part of Ormos Loutró, below the Tower ofAchilles.

The bottom here is very thick weed and our anchor did nothing more than dig into it, never reaching sand.  (I dived on the anchor) We were dragging in 5 metres of water with 25 metres of chain in a 10 to 15 knot wind.  There were two other yachts anchored to the east of us who didn’t appear to have our problems.

The next cove in Ormos Loutró to the west was weed covered as well and deep until close in, too close in. We decided to try Ahilio.

Treat these anchorages with caution, they may not be suitable.

Sailing south ….
